Nokia 5800 Firmware 31.0.008 Available

Nokia 5800 Firmware 31.0.008 Available

Nokia has released yet another firmware update for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic AKA The Tube mobile phones. The new version is 31.0.008 which is currently available for certain product codes via the OTA. But I guess it will soon be available on NSU as well.

There is a bad news for all Nokia 5800 users. Still no kinetic scrolling or custom homescreen in the new version. Guess we all have to wait a little longer. Even though there are no outstanding improvements in the new version, this one has a new Ovi maps and a new Ovi Stores client. You can also see that now more RAM is free in the mobile.

I personally feel that this update is of little or no importance. Nokia cannot survive in the mobile market for long if it still does not change its models based on the consumer demands. The 5800 community has been asking for kinetic scrolling and custom homescreen for almost an year now. Even the lower version Nokia 5530 has both these options. But Nokia is simply neglecting 5800 users. Hope this will end soon, probably in v 32.

Nokia 5800 Firmware 30.0.011Available

Nokia 5800 Firmware 30.0.011Available

Nokia has already started giving yet another firmware update for Nokia 5800 xpressmusic AKA The Tube. The new version is 30.0.011, and is available for certain product codes though OTA (Over The Air). But I guess it will also be available for other product codes and through NSU (Nokia Software Update) and Ovi Suite also.

I had updated my phone last night. Even though there is an unofficial change log available in almost all the related sites, I personally felt some improvement in the overall performance. The phone is more responsive than ever. Even though there are still no home screen widgets and kinetic scrolling, the phone has some remarkable improvements in the browser, camrea and music player functions.

The music player is more responsive now with almost no hick-ups. Now there is no need to press the side volume button to change the volume. The function has been added in the touchscreen itself. The equalizer has been improved. Its now much more pleasant to listen to the songs and even the smallest channel is clearly audible.

Another major improvement is in the camera function. The volume buttons can now be used for zooming, both in still and motion photography mode, and also in the gallery mode. The browser rendering is also improved and the browser is faster than ever.

An additional function to send SMS when on a call has also been added in the call menu. But I still miss some function in the phone. For instance, when the music player is running on minimized mode, there is no option to change the track. This function can atleast be added in the home screen or be made possible by the long press of the volums + and - buttons as in standard SE models. The camera night mode has to be improved a lot. The camera is almost useless at low light areas. I believe that Nokia comes up with a fix for this issues in the later updates. But I am also afraid because Nokia has a bad reputation of just forgetting its old customers when is come out with another new model, in this case the N97.

I hope that Nokia doesn't leave the early adapters of the first ever Symbian 60 V5 phones.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic - Nokia Tube

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic - Nokia TubeThe all new Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic phone, also known as Nokia Tube is truly an iPhone killer. I have been using Nokia 5800 for over a week now and the experience was really awesome. This is the second touch mobile from Nokia after a flopped Nokia 7700. But Nokia has certainly worked out on all the details this time to deliver a class product.

Nokia 5800 is certainly inspired by the iPhone hype and has taken a great care to make the phone which is more improved than the current iPhone version. Nokia 5800 has some features which are currently unavailable in the iPhone. For instance, Nokia 5800 has MMS capability, A-GPS, Handwriting Recognition and also a more flexible call register which are still missing in iPhone 3G.

And one of the best feature of Nokia 5800 is the offline Assisted-GPS (A-GPS) with a built in GPS receiver. This means that you don't need to subscribe for any data package connection. Just download the maps and that's it. The GPS receiver will automatically show your location using the set of 32 satellites and you can access the path to any place from your current location. Apparently, the iPhone 3G requires an internet connection (WiFi) for the GPS to work.

Other features of Nokia 5800 are:

1. 8 GB of on-board memory card, expandable upto 16 GB
2. An excellent music player with two stereo speakers
3. WiFi (802.b/g)
4. Supports third party Symbian and Java applications

As this is the first generation nokia touch phone it has some minor bugs, which I believe would be fixed through the updates.

1. The system stalls sometimes when you work on too many applications and restarts by itself
2. The scrolling of the screen is not as smooth as it can be

But as i said, these are minor bugs and will be fixed soon.

So the market is quite open now for all the customers. This is going to be a good battle between Nokia and iPhone in the touch phone world. And keeping the price factor and the network dependency in mind, Nokia is certainly ahead at this time. And the people who had opted not to buy iPhone earlier have a better alternative now.

So go ahead and grab your pack of Nokia 5800 XpressMusic now....
